The goal of early treatment is to correct the growth of the jaw and certain bite problems, such as a constricted upper jaw and an overbite. Most commonly used appliances in early orthodontic treatment are a palatal expander and braces. Studies show upper jaw expansion with an expander helps improve nasal breathing and normal lower jaw growth as well. Early treatment also helps to make room for permanent teeth to come in properly and lessen the severity of the future orthodontic treatment.
Early intervention can address several orthodontic concerns, including:
- Widening upper jaw to allow breath and sleep better.
- Guiding ideal jaw growth to avoid future complications.
- Creating space for permanent teeth and reducing crowding.
- Correcting bite issues such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites.
- Enhancing facial symmetry and improving oral function.
