Why Early Orthodontic Treatment Matters
Many parents assume orthodontics begins in the teenage years, but the American Association of Orthodontists recommends the first evaluation by age 7.
At this age, I can recognize the signs of problems that can only be
corrected within that crucial time frame of the growth period. Mouth and
teeth can tell much more than what are obviously visible -they show the
underlying causes of the problems such as skeletal development issues,
detrimental habits, airway and breathing problems. It is so important to
diagnose and treat them before it’s too late!
Addressing these issues early helps avoid more complex treatments later—and sets your child up for a confident, healthy smile, as well as ideal face and jaw development.
A Real Case from My Practice: Correcting a Crossbite Early
Another patient, a 7 year old girl, came to my office with a posterior crossbite – her upper teeth were biting inside her lower teeth on one side. If left untreated, this could have caused uneven jaw growth, asymmetry, and more surgically assisted later.
We began with an early palatal expander to gradually widen her upper jaw.
Within a few weeks of expander placement, her crossbite bite corrected completely, preventing jaw shift and asymmetry. Also, creating enough space allowed her new permanent teeth to erupt properly in the right positions. After the expansion phase, we transitioned to partial braces to align the erupted teeth. The result?
She has a beautiful, functional smile and a boost in confidence every time she laughs or smiles at school.
