Airway Orthodontist NYC: What Causes Crooked Teeth

Airway Orthodontist NYC: What Causes Crooked Teeth? (It’s Not What You Think)

Hi,

Have you ever been told you need braces or aligners, but no one ever explained why your teeth became crooked in the first place?

In my practice, this is one of the most important conversations I have with patients every single day. Many people assume crooked teeth are simply genetic or cosmetic. But in reality, your smile is often telling a much deeper story about your breathing, your jaw development, and even your sleep.

As a specialist in orthodontics and airway, I don’t just focus on straightening teeth – I look at the big picture on understanding what caused them to shift in the first place. Because when we treat the root cause, not just the symptoms, we create healthier, more stable results that actually remove the ongoing problems.

Because in many cases, crooked teeth are not the problem — they’re a symptom.

Let’s talk about why.

What Causes Crooked Teeth? A Deeper Look

Most traditional orthodontics focuses on straightening teeth after they become crowded or misaligned.

But airway-focused orthodontics asks a different question:

What caused the teeth to become crooked in the first place?

In many patients, the root cause comes down to constricted airway and breathing issues that affect how the jaw and face develop — especially during childhood.

Here are the most common underlying causes I see:

  1. Mouth Breathing Instead of Nasal Breathing

Healthy development starts with breathing through the nose.

When a child breathes through the mouth:

  • The tongue drops from the roof of the mouth
  • The upper jaw doesn’t fully develop
  • The dental arch becomes narrow

This often leads to upper and lower jaw mismatching, crowded, impacted teeth and bite issues.

  1. Improper Tongue Posture

Your tongue plays a huge role in shaping your smile.

When the tongue rests properly on the roof of the mouth, it helps:

  • Widen the upper jaw
  • Support proper facial growth
  • Keep teeth in natural position

But when the tongue sits low (which is common with airway issues), the result is often:

  • Narrow arches
  • Overcrowding teeth
  • Misaligned and crooked teeth
  1. Poor Jaw Development

Crowded teeth are often a sign that there simply isn’t enough space in the jaw to fit in all teeth. When you have a pencil holder, you can only fit certain number of pencils. When it’s full, pencils will be sticking out and about to fall out.

This can happen when:

  • The upper jaw (maxilla) doesn’t grow wide enough
  • The lower jaw lags a forward growth due to narrow maxilla constricting lower jaw coming forward
  • The airway is compromised and tongue position is non-ideal

As an airway orthodontist in NYC, I see this connection every day – especially in patients with sleep or breathing concerns.

  1. Sleep-Disordered Breathing (Even in Kids)

Many parents are surprised to learn this:

Conditions like snoring, mouth breathing, or mild sleep apnea can directly impact how a child’s face and teeth develop.

When the body isn’t getting optimal oxygen during sleep:

  • Growth patterns can change
  • The jaw may develop improperly
  • Teeth may shift into crowded positions

This is why airway orthodontics focuses on early evaluation and prevention, not just correction later.

  1. Habits Like Thumb-Sucking or Prolonged Pacifier Use

Certain childhood habits can also influence development, including:

  • Thumb-sucking
  • Extended pacifier use
  • Tongue thrusting

These habits can push teeth out of alignment and affect jaw growth over time.

Why Traditional Orthodontics Isn’t Always Enough

Traditional braces or aligners can absolutely straighten teeth and they do a great job at that.

But here’s the key:

If we don’t address why the teeth became crooked, we may only be treating the surface.

As an airway orthodontist in NYC, my approach is comprehensive. I focus on:

  • Airway health
  • Proper jaw development
  • Long-term stability
  • Overall wellness (not just aesthetics)

Because a beautiful smile should also be a healthy, functional one.
